Morinville is a vibrant and diverse community, 15-minutes north of St. Albert, and only a 30-minute drive away from Edmonton. MCL is a community hub providing a wide range of services to the residents of Morinville and surrounding area.

The Library Director is responsible for all areas of library services and operations, including planning, developing, managing, organizing, evaluating, and actively participating in the day-to-day functioning of the library. This is done within the framework of the Library’s Plan of Service, budget, policies, and bylaws.

Key Responsibilities

Planning, Policy, and Library Development: Advise and assist the Board in developing policies, bylaws, and the Plan of Service. Interpret and implement library policies to staff and patrons, establish and update procedures, and act as the FOIP Coordinator.

Library Services and Programs: Monitor and assess the needs of the community, oversee the development and management of all services to the public, including reference services, collection development, circulation services, and programming.

Personnel Administration and Professional Development: Recruit, hire, supervise, mentor, and conduct annual performance evaluations of staff. Plan and implement ongoing staff development. Administer salary and hourly wage grid and recommend pay increases to the Board. Develop, review and update job descriptions. Schedule staff and approve personnel requests. Perform other HR duties, including health and safety training and risk assessment.

Financial Administration: Prepare an annual budget in coordination with the Board’s Budget Committee. Administer the approved budget, monitor financial operations, and provide regular reports on financial matters to the Board. Approve expenditures and request quotes and RFPs.

Public Relations and Communications: Direct the ongoing promotion of the Library and its services to the general public, represent the Library at community functions and Council meetings and maintain relationships with library partners and collaborators.

Library Board Support: Attend Board and Committee meetings, report regularly to the Board on library activities, prepare reports as directed by the Board and/or as required by municipal, provincial, or federal authorities. Prepare Board information packages and ensure timely distribution of reports and information.

Job Requirements

  • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)
  • Education and training related to bookkeeping (QuickBooks), HR and FOIP are assets
  • 3 - 5 years experience in public library services
  • 3 - 5 years experience in management and supervision
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office 365, internet and social media
  • Excellent research skills
  • Excellent skills in math, statistics, and reporting
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English. French is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent public relations and leadership skills
