Library Cards

Rules & Requirements

Library cards are renewed on a yearly basis; membership fees must be paid annually to maintain an active library account.

You must present proof of residence (driver's license with current address, utility bills, and status cards are all acceptable proofs of residence) in order to be eligible for a library card.

The library accepts cash, cheque, debit, Visa, or Mastercard at the front desk. We are unable to take online payments at this time.

If you are unable to physically present yourself at the library but would like a library card, please call the library at 780-939-3292 during normal operating hours to discuss accommodations.

If you are financially strained and need support to access a library card, please call the library or ask at the front desk what subsidies are available for your situation.

Membership Benefits

Library Materials

Your library card allows you to borrow and take home materials in a variety of languages, age ranges, and formats. For more details on loan periods, renewals, and fines, please see the Borrowing page.

To search the library catalogue for items that are available now at MCL, click the link below. Items that are on our shelves will show as "Local Availability: 1 (of 1)".

Online Services

You can use your library card to access your library account online through the TRAC consortium. Using your barcode and library PIN, you can view your checkouts, renew items, place and cancel holds, view your reading history, and create and save personalized booklists.

Please note: Legal residents may use their library cards to view and renew items, access reading history, and save booklists, but may not place holds. For more information, please call the library at 780-939-3292

Your library card login also allows you access to our e-Resources, which give you online versions of everything from books and movies to language learning and car repair.

TRAC Consortium

MCL is part of a much larger group of Alberta libraries called TRAC (The Regional Automation Consortium). When you search the TRAC catalogue, you are also searching the collections of over 200 member libraries in Alberta.

You can place a hold on these items with your library login and have them shipped to MCL, or the library location of your choice, at your convenience. The items can then be returned at MCL or any other TRAC library.

Limitations:

  • Each TRAC library sets its own loan periods and overdue fines. They may be different from those at MCL.
  • The amount of time to receive your hold can vary based on factors such as the popularity of your item, the staffing available at the library sending the item, and the  amount of items available in the system.

ME Libraries

Cardholders can access materials at Alberta libraries that are not part of the TRAC consortium (for example St. Albert or Edmonton Public Libraries) by connecting their library card to the ME Libraries system. The card can then be used to take out physical items from these libraries.

Limitations:

  • ME Library cards cannot give access to e-Resources .
  • Some libraries may have limits on the number of items that can be borrowed with a ME library card; please check with the library you wish to borrow from.
