Borrowing Basics

There are no limits on the number of items you can borrow at one time, but please remember that you are responsible for all overdue charges. Note that loan times may be different for materials borrowed from libraries other than MCL.

Loans

Books, audiobooks, magazines 3 weeks 2 renewals
Movies, Music CDs 1 week 2 renewals
TV series 3 weeks No renewals

Renewals

Renewals add the same amount of time as the original loan, starting from when the renewal took place. Log into your account to renew items in your account, or call the library during operating hours and request a renewal.

An item can only be renewed if it has not been requested elsewhere.
We cannot guarantee that you will be able to renew an item.

Overdue Charges

All overdue items: 25¢ per item per day. Note that overdue fines may be different for materials libraries other than MCL material.

Access to items will be restricted when your account reaches $10.00 or more in fines. Keep your library card active and pay down a portion of your fine to under $10.00. Any balance must be paid before you renew your membership for another year.

Damaged Item Charges

  • If an item is severely damaged while on your library account,
you will be charged for the replacement cost of the item
  • Library staff will check for damage before checking out an item to you,
but please check yourself before taking the item home
  • Inform library staff if you notice anything out of order
  • Library staff cannot accept replacements, even if identical,
without first having the replacement approved
  • Please inform library staff if you have damaged an item
and we will work with you to find an appropriate solution

Library Card Benefits

Library Materials

Your library card allows you to borrow and take home materials in a variety of languages, age ranges, and formats. Search the TRAC Catalogue for items that are available now at MCL. Items that are on our shelves will show as "Local Availability: 1 (of 1)".

Online Services and eResources

Use your library card to access your library account online. Using your library username (barcode) and PIN, view your checkouts, renew items, place and cancel holds, view your reading history, and create and save personalized booklists.

Please note: Non-resident cardholders have restricted access. For more information, please call the library at 780-939-3292

Your library card also gives you access to our many e-Resources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, language learning, car repair resources and more!

NLLS and TRAC

MCL is part of the Northern Lights Library System (NLLS). NLLS is a member of a larger group of Alberta libraries called TRAC (The Regional Automation Consortium). When you search the TRAC catalogue, you are also searching the collections of over 200 member libraries in Alberta.

Place a hold on these items with your library login and they will be transferred to MCL, or the library location of your choice, at your convenience. The items can then be returned at MCL or any other TRAC library.

Limitations:

  • Each TRAC library sets its own loan periods and overdue fines. They may be different from those at MCL.
  • The amount of time to receive your hold can vary based on factors such as the popularity of your item, the staffing available at the library sending the item, and the  amount of items available in the system.

ME Libraries

Cardholders can access materials at Alberta libraries that are not part of TRAC (for example St. Albert or Edmonton Public Libraries), by connecting their library card through ME Libraries. The card can then be used to take out physical items from these libraries.

Limitations to ME Libraries:

  • ME Library cards cannot give access to e-Resources of the connected library.
  • Some libraries may have limits on the number of items that can be borrowed with a ME library card; please check with the library you wish to borrow from.
