MCL Seed Library is Coming

February 21 2023

On March 15th, we will be opening our first Seed Library — in the library! This collection will be available to anyone in the community with or without a library card.

What is a seed library anyway? Avid gardeners may know, but if you do not, let us explain what it is and how it works!

A Seed Library is a collection of seeds that have been harvested from local gardens and donated to us for everyone to use. Our starter collection has been kindly been donated to us by the Northern Seed Library, and they are free for the public to take and plant in their own gardens. The goal of a seed library is to preserve the biodiversity of a local area’s plant life, and to provide access for everyone to grow their own vegetable and flower gardens. Part of this goal is to encourage seed returns at the end of the growing season. If you would like to know more about the process of seed saving, please see the resources on our Seed Library page. Consider joining our Seed Saving 101 Workshop on March 15th!

Some of the seeds we currently are offering are:

  • Moon glow tomatoes
  • Wulff Dill (Dillweed)
  • Lovage
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Calypso beans
  • Marigolds

We are currently accepting seed donations — if you have been blessed with abundant harvests, please feel free to either visit our website more information and donation forms, or come in and ask at the front desk.

We are excited to share this community project just in time for gardening season!
